{"id":1463,"date":"2021-06-08T14:59:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-08T17:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/petrusraulino.com.br\/?p=1463"},"modified":"2024-11-11T17:19:55","modified_gmt":"2024-11-11T20:19:55","slug":"epigenetic-drugs-for-anxiety-disorders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/petrusraulino.com.br\/en\/epigenetic-drugs-for-anxiety-disorders\/","title":{"rendered":"Epigenetic drugs for anxiety disorders?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>By Dr. Petrus Raulino<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h2>About epigenetic drugs<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Epigenetic drugs for anxiety disorders are not yet a reality in clinical practice, as they are at the experimental research stage. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it's worth following the evolution of knowledge and finding out about ongoing research.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety disorders are common mental disorders with a global annual prevalence of 7.3%. The age of onset of these disorders is usually around 20 years old, with women twice as likely to be diagnosed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is believed that psychological and biological factors contribute to the pathogenesis of anxiety disorders.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Psychological factors<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The psychological factors involved in the pathogenesis involve traumatic and stressful life events, especially during childhood. O <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress is known to activate many neuronal circuits, such as those in the hippocampus and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the biological factors involved are epigenetic mechanisms of gene expression, i.e, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">complex traits involving multiple genes interacting with environmental factors (not involving changes in the DNA sequence, but altering the activity of genes).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Epigenetic mechanisms and<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These involve molecular mechanisms such as DNA methylation, DNA hydroxymethylation, histone modifications and regulation of gene expression mediated by non-coding RNA (ncRNA).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Biological factors<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental factors can cause changes in epigenetic mechanisms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is evidence that epigenetic mechanisms are deregulated in practically all types of psychiatric disorders and that these deregulated mechanisms contribute to pathogenesis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The importance of new research<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several classes of <a href=\"https:\/\/petrusraulino.com.br\/en\/antidepressants-reduce-the-risk-of-intubation-or-death-in-patients-hospitalized-with-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medicines<\/a> effective for <a href=\"https:\/\/petrusraulino.com.br\/en\/anxiety-in-men-during-the-perinatal-period\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">treatment of anxiety.\u00a0<\/a>However, not everyone adapts to the drugs currently available, due to side effects or a lack of satisfactory therapeutic response.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why new research is so important. One potential class of new drugs for the treatment of anxiety are epigenetic drugs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pre-clinical and clinical pharmacological trials - still experimental - using HDACi (histone deacetylase inhibitor) for treatment are showing favorable results<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This allows research to continue with larger samples of patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mode of action of HDACi in anxiety disorders is still unclear. More research is needed to elucidate HDACi's mode of action in relieving the signs and symptoms of anxiety disorders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a long way to go in this line of research, but scientific knowledge opens up new possibilities that could transform the list of therapeutic options for anxiety disorders in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>References<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peedicayil, J.
